Next was the RAW "converter" with extremely limited adjustments. You can't read the EXIF data correctly? Hmmm. dng file correctly it said the image I imported was taken in 2098 instead of 1998 also got the color temperature as shot wrong, 3500K or something versus the actual 4350K. But for the long term, I'd really like to see Adobe have to face genuine competition after they exerted their monopoly power.ĭownloaded the 30 day free trial of Corel PaintShop Pro X7.

I know Corel have been adding numerous features since PSP X, but I haven't made the effort to assess whether they're actually delivering finished software that offers 16-bit editing in wide-gamut color spaces.įor the time being, I'm sticking with Photoshop CS5 and converting raw files from my new camera to DNG (I know that's also making a deal with the devil, but it's a less unattractive option than renting Photoshop). Adobe alienated many users when they went to a rental model, so there's a large market for a genuine alternative. That said, I really would like to see PSP become a serious alternative to Photoshop. It would be no exaggeration to say that it was Corel that sold me Photoshop! I was so frustrated with what could only be called a "pre-beta" release (with documentation so incomplete that a group of loyal users effectively donated their labor to produce their own on-line reference) that I decided to make the switch to Photoshop CS2.
For me it was the promise of color management as well as 16-bit editing. I was also a long-time PSP user who fell for Corel's empty promises of PSP X. Us old folks got Grandkids and Great-grandkids we gotta record for posterity cause those progeny are wasting their photos on cell phone cameras and not saving them for the future.Sarah Fox's comments make me laugh.

We also teach a digital photography class to the elderly in a PC Users Group using PSP. My husband and I are well over 50 and still learning. With this book I am learning soooo much more and making some fantastic photos, greeting cards, scrapbook pages. The Straighten Picture and Red Eye Removal Tools are so simple it is amazing and also not surprising that Corel captured PSP and started incorporating the best PSP Tools with their own. Corel had it's own program but, for me there were several TOOLS that not only baffled me but didn't work near as well. This program let me use the new digital cameras and work my pictures to perfection and I am not a computer buff. I have even been blessed by winning some recognition in the field, but have never considered myself a professional. I have taken pictures with major camera's for years even had a hard working darkroom in a small shed. At the time it had more usable feature for working with pictures and was easier to use and understand than any of the others. I have used PSP since it was Jasc PaintShop Pro 7 back in 2003.

By the way - it's available in a Kindle edition, and I'm a long-time Kindle owner, but I like manuals such as this to be a physical book that I can refer to when I need to. It's easy to jump right to a topic, but I'm working my way through the whole book step-by-step, and it's really helping me learn a lot. It's well-organized, with loads of color photos. I browsed through the learning manuals available and decided on "Picture Yourself Learning Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3" and I think it's a great book. I also wanted more detail, as I've been really wanting to delve deeper into photo editing. It seems to me that in order to understand the "befores and afters", you need to be able to look at color photos. I'm just beginning to find my way around the program, and although I was happy to see that the software came with a manual, it's a very small one with black and white pictures. I discovered that Microsoft no longer makes that program, so I opted for Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3. For years I'd been using Microsoft Digital Image Suite which I loved.
